6 Tips for Decorating with Rugs

There are many reasons why you should decorate a room with a rug. It could be to make the room less boring, bring color to the surroundings, or add a bit of uniqueness to a place. In any case, placing a rug correctly in a room could help cultivate a more welcoming environment. Here in this article, we will discuss different tips and tricks for you to keep in mind when decorating with rugs:

1. Control the volume
Use your rugs to decorate a room visually or maybe turn up the volume if need be. If your wallpaper or upholstery has an ornamental pattern, try picking a rug that compliments it and is subtle. Don't have a statement piece yet? Consider a highly textured or colorful piece that brings the floors to life.

2. Use Rugs to Define Areas
You can use rugs as a sort of visual partition for your room to define specific areas. For example, an area rug under a dining room table can really highlight the furniture and create a cohesive space. This technique is usually best for studio-type apartments or large, open floor plans.

3. Variety
Mixing and matching textures, sizes, and colors is an easy way to spice up a room and take your style to the next level. Consider rugs of various sizes with similar palettes, or mixing solids with prints for a contrasting look.

4. Harmony
When using multiple rugs, each rug should complement each other to create harmony or unity in the room. Remember, though: harmony doesn't need to mean matching. A statement rug offset with neutral pieces can be just as harmonious with the right touch.

5. Make Sure You Get the Size Right
If you choose to buy a room-sized rug, try subtracting at least 3 feet from the room's original size to make sure it fits comfortably in the space. Leaving the floor bare at the edges makes the room look a little larger and frames your furniture. When laying a rug under your dining table, leave at least 24" of the rug from the edge of the table out on all sides. This enables the back legs of the chairs to stay on the rug, even when pulled out to let someone sit.

6. Play Around with Shapes
In addition to combining sizes, combining shapes is an easy and stylish way to elevate a room. Consider a circular rug to cushion the focal point of a room, such as an entry table or foyer, and runners for kitchens, hallways, and nooks. There truly is a rug for every space; it's just a matter of deciding which one!
